While it is easy to play blackjack, it takes some additional knowledge and skill to play a good game of blackjack. After mastering the basic strategy of blackjack, players will want to improve their game. The following tips from experienced blackjack players can be incorporated into the game as they are learnt.

When to Split

  • Aces and 8's should always be split. It does not matter what card is turned up by the dealer in these two cases.

  • Players should always split 2's and 3's when the hand is being played against either a 4, 5 or 6.

  • 7's should always be split when the hand is being played against the dealer's card of either a lower or the equal value of 7.

  • 5's, 10's and face cards should never be split.

When to Stand

  • When dealt 17 or higher, the best thing to do is to stand.

When to Hit

  • Players should hit until 17 or higher if the dealer's hand has a 10.

  • Players should hit a soft 17 against a dealer's 10.

General Tips

Players should keep their emotions under control at all times when playing blackjack, whether in a live dealer online casino or in a land-bases casino. It is also better that players keep their emotions under control even when playing online by themselves.

Players should never take out frustration on the dealer if they lose. The dealer plays according to a set of rules and does not choose which cards either the dealer or the player are dealt. In other words, 'Don't shoot the messenger.'

Besides for not taking out frustrations on the dealer, it is not good form for players to blame other players. The best way for a player to deal with any frustrations they have regarding the playing strategies of other players, is to move to a different blackjack table.

In land-based casinos, players may receive free drinks, but if they lose huge amounts of money, the free drinks will not have been worth it.

As with all gambling sessions, players should set themselves goals. Some set themselves only loss limits, and others set themselves both loss limits and winning goals. Either way, it is very important to stop play as soon as a loss limit has been reached.

If there is a choice of games available, the one with the least decks of cards is the best game to play. The house edge jumps drastically when switching from one deck of cards to two decks. When playing with more than two decks, the house edge does not jump up that significantly each time an additional deck is added.

Choosing a Game

When looking for a game to join, try and fulfill as many of the following points as you can for the most favorable rules for the player:

  • single deck game

  • multiple pair splitting allowed in the game

  • a game in which aces may be resplit

  • double down should be allowed on any two cards, and also after pairs have been split

  • the dealer should have to stand on a soft 17

Following the above tips will enhance the player's gaming pleasure and will increase their chances of winning.
