Warner Bros and Lord of the Rings Coming to Microgaming

At the end of January, at the IGE (International Gaming Expo), Microgaming announced that there would soon be a deal in place in which a number of new branded slots games would be released.

About a week later, Microgaming announced that they had signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. This is not the first time that Microgaming has made agreements regarding branded games. In January this year, Dark Horse Comics’ Hellboy video slot game was released. Microgaming released the first online branded slot games when they released Tomb Raider some time ago.

The agreement with Warner Bros. gives Microgaming the go-ahead to design and release video slots based on The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The movies, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels were immensely popular.

The three movies, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King may all be used according to the deal. Not only can the themes and the characters of the movies be used, but Microgaming has permission to use the outstanding animation material from the movies. This means that the video slots will be rich in great graphics, helping them to keep these video slots of the highest quality.

This is an extremely exciting move from Microgaming, and was expressed by their Chief Executive Officer, Roger Raatgever, who said “We’re excited about creating state-of-the-art video slots from the best movie trilogy of the decade. We look forward to bringing The Lord of the Rings into the online gaming sphere, where our expertise in game quality and speed to market will ensure its success. The Lord of the Rings has a huge entrenched fan base with over 97% awareness of the film franchise, as well as phenomenal and unprecedented home video success."

The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy won 17 Oscars, out of 30 nominations. All three movies won the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The global box office take came to more than $3 billion.
