US Online Gambling in the News Again
April 19, 2012 | News Category: Gaming Law
While some states in the United States are doing all that they can to ban and outlaw online gambling, there are others that are investigating the possibility of legalizing or regulating online gambling in one form or another. Some states are only looking into legalizing online poker, while others, such as New Jersey, are looking into regulating and legalizing online casinos, as long as they are based out of Atlantic City, the state's land based gambling center.
Other states, such as Massachusetts and Delaware have also been looking into legalizing or regulating online gambling in the near future. Nevada has been investigating the possibility of legalizing online poker for some time now.
There are many that feel that if Nevada goes ahead with legalizing online poker, it will pave the way for other gambling jurisdictions in the United States to legalize either online poker or other forms of online gambling, such as online casinos. Barney Frank, who has been trying to legalize online gambling in the United States, had much to say regarding the possibility of legalizing online poker in Nevada.
While Barney Frank feels that online poker will be legalized in Nevada within the near future, he has some doubts as to whether online poker will be legalized and regulated on a federal level anytime soon. Although he believes this to be likely within the next couple of years, he feels that federal legalization of any form of online gambling is not likely yet.
Frank said: "It's still possible. Reid wants to do it. A lot of people here want to do it. It might get done in the lame duck (session of Congress). It could get done as part of an overall package. But I think other things will replace it."
He also noted that Senator Jon Kyl who is opposed to legalizing online gambling on a federal level is a big obstacle. Frank commented: "We might have to wait until Kyl is out of office for this to get done."
In both Delaware and in Massachusetts, there have been meetings that have been taking place with state officials and gambling boards. In Delaware, the State Financial Director, Tom Cook, has been to meetings with the Delaware Video Lottery Council, in order to explain, and try to make attractive to the council, the idea of legalization of online gambling in Delaware. In Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has already met to discuss online gambling and tribal casinos. A second meeting has already been scheduled.
