PRWeb Ordered to Stop Online Gambling Press Releases
April 19, 2009 | News Category: Online Casinos
PRWeb has now been told that they may not promote online gambling anymore. They have been ordered to stop publishing press releases that are connected to the online gambling industry. This is a very big blow to the online gaming industry, as PRWeb has been one of the main press release sites to carry articles regarding many aspects of the online gaming world.
PRWeb.com is based in Washington State. In Washington State, for those that wish to place bets on the Internet, it is important to know that online gambling is considered a Class C felony. Washington State is the only state to have a law like this in connection to online gambling. The state law turning online betting into a Class C felony was passed in 2006. It seems that the law was passed mostly from pressure that was exerted by the land-based groups of casinos that operate in Washington State.
PRWeb is part of the Vocus group. Vocus is based in Maryland while PRWeb is based in Washington State. Vocus is a publicly held company which provides customized Web-based software for public relations purposes, including the distribution of press releases via RSS over the Internet. Their distribution partners include well-known names such as Excite News, Lycos News, Google News, Yahoo! News, eMediaWire and Topix.net.
PRWeb owns international web sites in Spanish, French, French-Canadian, English-Canadian and Chinese, which distribute press releases to international markets via the Internet.
Although PRWeb will be badly affected by this ruling, other press release websites, such as Press Release 365, are hoping to pick up some of the clients that had previously published their press releases through PRWeb.
The Managing Director of Press Release 365, John Montgomery, said "We value all of our clients across the globe. It is our job to distribute press releases to the appropriate news outlets, both domestic and international."
Although Washington State has introduced anti-online gambling laws, one has to wonder why they have chosen to take things one step further, by not allowing an Internet-based press release website to release news articles pertaining to online gambling which is obviously not applicable to their state.
