Online Casinos - Keeping the Elderly Young
December 14, 2009 | News Category: Online Casinos
Those of us who take a moment to stop and think about how computer technology has changed our lives, and how we would operate in a world without this technology, will come to the conclusion that this incredible technology will become indispensable.
While there are those that criticize online casinos for drawing in the elderly and causing them to waste their savings, there is another important point that has been uncovered in a new study that may well bring support to those elderly who wish to play in online casinos.
Many older people are looking for leisure activities to fill the many hours they have available since they have retired. A fair number of senior citizens have learned how to use computers simply so that they can conveniently play their favorite casino games online, and from the comfort of their own homes.
A research study conducted by Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania showed that nearly 70 percent of the 1,000 elderly that were questioned in the study showed that they had taken part in gambling activity in the past year. It seems that many senior citizens are learning how to use computers in order to learn how to play in online casinos.
By getting over the fears and barriers that can come with learning new things at an older age because they wish to play in online casinos, many older people are beginning to use computers for the sole purpose of online gambling.
Studies show that one of the important ways to keep your brain healthy is to constantly learn and be taught new things. An Associate Professor from Melbourne Monash University’s School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine, Stephen Robinson, says that it is important to learn new things in order to simulate yourself mentally, which promotes better health. It is particularly important for those who are elderly, since it is one way that Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can be staved off.
Neuroscientists explain the importance of doing and learning new tasks in order to keep the brain healthy and to keep the connection between brain cells active. Those senior citizens who join online casinos and figure out how to use computers in order to do so are teaching their brains new tricks, which helps to keep them active and healthy. Added to this, those that choose to play certain skill-based games, such as poker, baccarat or blackjack are further stimulating their mental faculties.
Playing in online casinos is therefore likely to be better than a trip to a land-based casino where senior citizens mostly spend time playing slots, which is fairly automatic and requires very little brain activity.
As long as senior citizens are able to keep control of their finances, and only gamble with money that they can afford to gamble with, gambling in online casinos is likely to cause healthier, happier, and more alert senior citizens.
