Is the Recession Affecting Online Casinos

While there is no doubt that the recession is affecting land-based casinos, there is speculation as to whether it will have an impact on online casinos, and if it does, to what extent they will be affected.

Land-based casinos in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada are experiencing hard times. These countries are feeling the lower tax revenues they usually receive because of the serious down trend in land-based casino revenue. Many types of entertainment are being affected as people simply have less disposable income available.

In the United States, both Atlantic City and Las Vegas have been hard hit. Las Vegas has been offering very good deals for hotel stays and flights in order to try to attract more players to their casinos. There are simply less people traveling in these difficult economic times.

According to the reports for the last quarter of 2008, online casinos, on the other hand, have shown as a general trend that as the economy has declined, their revenue has either increased or held steady. Experts believe that this trend will continue into 2009.

Many casino gamblers who would usually travel to land-based casinos, whether for overnight stays or simply for a few hours, find the expense of the travel to be too high. For those who do not wish to forgo their favorite leisure activity, they will choose to rather gamble in an online casino than travel to a land-based casino. Online casinos offer bonuses and other attractions, such as freerolls, to entice clients and keep them coming back. Freerolls allow players to play for free and keep any winnings they make.

Experts believe that it is likely that the already big online casinos will increase in size, while smaller online casinos may fall by the wayside unless they manage to offer something extra that the larger online casinos are not offering. Many of the larger, well-established, online casinos are hoping that the European Union will be successful in stopping monopolies in EU member countries as this will give them a chance to enter these lucrative markets. France has already begun to open up their market to international online casinos.

Experts believe that people may even choose to play in online casinos rather than going out to the movies or other land-based entertainment because for much less cash, they can be entertained for longer. Of course, there is always the possibility of winning big that will further entice players.
