CryptoLogic and Marvel Extend Agreement
June 25, 2009 | News Category: Casino Software
CryptoLogic announced, in a press release from their Dublin headquarters, that they have, once again, extended their exclusive agreement with Marvel Entertainment Inc. The exclusive licensing agreement was first signed in 2005, and has now been extended on three different occasions. This time the agreement has been extended until 2013.
As two leading companies in their own fields, CryptoLogic as an online gaming software provider, and Marvel Entertainment Inc. as the owners of comic book superhero brands, their combined efforts have certainly been mutually beneficial. CryptoLogic software has become more sought after than it was before it signed its contract with Marvel, and have recently signed some deals to offer their superhero themed games on other software platforms.
CryptoLogic have released a number of slot games that are based on Marvel Comics superheroes, bringing the likes of X-Men, the Hulk, Spiderman, Daredevil, the Punisher, The Fantastic Four and others to their players' screens.
CryptoLogic's President and CEO, Brian Hadfield expressed his excitement at the renewed relationship between CryptoLogic and Marvel Entertainment by saying, "It's exciting to extend a deal that has been mutually successful and profitable, and to strengthen CryptoLogic's competitive advantage in the branded gaming space. We look forward to working with Marvel to deliver an even more compelling experience for every player, every day."
Marvel Entertainment Inc. are also pleased with the extended deal with CryptoLogic, as Simon Philips, President, Worldwide Consumer Products for Marvel Entertainment said about CryptoLogic: "They have proven they are able to translate Marvel's world renowned Superheroes into hugely successful Internet casino games and we are confident they will continue to fully leverage these properties on a global level."
Although CryptoLogic owns exclusive rights to Marvel comic characters, Playtech signed an exclusive deal earlier this year with Marvel Characters B.V., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. This deal between Playtech and Marvel Characters B.V. gives Playtech the right to use Marvel's motion picture branded superheroes for their games. Since many of the most well-known comic book superheroes have moved from the comic book pages to the big screen, one has to wonder how different these two deals are. Marvel obviously makes the distinction between their comic book brands and their movie brands.
CryptoLogic do not seem to be concerned that Playtech will also release Marvel's branded superhero games in the future. Certainly online casino players will benefit from the competition that exists between online gaming software companies since the competition ensures that the software is constantly improved on.
