What is a Craps Proposition Bet?

The craps proposition bets are also known as the craps center bets. The name 'center bets' came from the location in which the bets are found on the craps table - in the center.

The proposition bet, or the center bet, covers a group of wagers that can be placed. The actual wager is placed on very specific outcomes of the numbers appearing on the dice. The craps table is usually designed as a mirror image, with the place for the proposition bets in the center. There is only one area for proposition bets, as this part of the craps table is not a mirror image. This area is used for players on both sides of the craps table.

Which Bets are Proposition Bets?

For the most part, craps proposition bets are one roll bets. This means that a player will place the bet, after which the shooter will throw the dice. The outcome of those dice will determine whether the player wins, and takes the chips, or whether the player loses the proposition bet, and the house, or the dealer, takes the chips.

The hardways proposition bet is the only craps proposition bet that could take a number of throws of the dice before a player either wins or loses. The result is not always determined within one roll of the dice as are the other craps proposition bets.

The following is a list of craps proposition bets:

Any Craps - The numbers 2, 3, and 12 are called craps numbers.
Snake Eyes - This is when there are two ones thrown.
Craps Three - The number 3.
Any Seven - The number 7 that can be made from any dice combination, such as 6 and 1, 5 and 2, 4 and 3.
Yo-Eleven - The number 11. It is called yo-eleven because the numbers seven and eleven sound similar, and by adding in the 'yo,' there will be no confusion or arguments that the stickman did not hear correctly.
Craps Twelve - The number 12.
Horn - A bet placed on four proposition numbers at the same time.
Hardway - This bet is placed on number 4, 6, 8, or 10. If the number is thrown as a double, the player wins, and if thrown in a different combination, the player loses.

When to Place a Proposition Bet

Players may place proposition bets at any time that they wish to during the craps game, however, it is considered good etiquette to place the bets before the shooter receives the dice. In a land based casino, the proposition bets are placed by the stickman. The player should place their chips in the center of the table, and then let the stickman know where the bets should be placed.
