Online Gambling has Moved Governments to Act

The online gambling industry is a fairly new one as far as industries go, and when comparing the industry to a number of other industries. The online gambling industry has obviously sprung out of the computer industry, and has developed more and more as there are new technologies available to be used.

With the growth of online gambling, lawmakers in countries all over the world have found themselves facing the reality that whether they want their citizens to gamble or not, it is now available to all at the click of a few buttons. This opened up discussions as to whether online gambling was a positive or a negative thing, and whether governments would allow it or not.

There are some governments, like that of the United Kingdom, who have embraced the industry, and have legalized and regulated online gambling. There are other countries, such as the United States, and a number of other countries that have made moves to have online gambling outlawed. Interestingly, these countries usually allow some form of land based gambling, even if it is only a state or government lottery, but will not allow online casino gambling and other forms of online gambling such as online poker.

Although there are those that will argue that this is not the case, in certain circumstances, it is fairly obvious that the reason for outlawing online gambling in certain areas is simply because the 'powers that be' do not want competition for established land based gambling companies, such as land based casinos, and horse racing.

There are of course other countries or jurisdictions that do not allow land based or online gambling, and they work hard to try to ban online gambling because they have decided that they do not want their residents involved in any form of gambling.

Countries such as the United States and South Africa have recently passed legislation that is set up to try and prevent those who live in their countries from gambling online. These countries have enlisted the aid of unwilling partners, such as Internet Service Providers, and banking institutions, to help them keep online gambling away.

Interestingly, it seems that where there is a will, there is a way, because many who live in countries where online casino gambling is banned, still find a way to play one of their favorite pastimes. Whether this is good or bad is a question for the people who are gambling online and for their governments to answer.

Whichever way you look at it, online gambling has shaken the world to action, either to be embraced with open arms, or with an attempt to shut down online casino operations.
