Life and Times - The Internet and Online Gambling
July 07, 2010 | Article Category: Online Casinos
When I grew up, cellular telephones were non-existent, and when people began to use them, it did not feel like they would become an indispensable part of daily living. While cell phones are still not part of daily living for most of those living in third world countries, those that have the technology available to them most certainly make good use of this form of communication. Of course, there will always be those who make a point of keeping away from new and exciting technology simply because they want to hold onto the past, or perhaps they really want their peace and quiet, without phone calls disturbing their days.
When it comes to cell phones, and laptop computers, most of us could not imagine living the lives we do without them, as they have become an almost indispensable part of our daily lives. One should remember, however, that cell phones did not become a trend overnight, and especially for those of the older generation, many of whom are now expert cell phone users, there was most likely a lot of resistance.
There are those that feel that Internet gambling is being afforded similar treatment at this time. Although the Internet has been around, albeit in a very simple form since around 1970, it only began to be used by certain sectors of the public in the early eighties, where it was mostly used for e-mail. The World Wide Web as we know it began in 1993 when Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser program, Mosaic. When Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser, he had intended it to be used by scientists in order to exchange and share scientific pages.
Nobody would have thought how quickly the Internet would become something that is taken for granted by so many of us nowadays. For those who enjoy gambling, being able to enjoy their leisure time from the comfort of their own homes is something that they feel should be their right, and their choice. This feeling is especially strong in those countries that do, in fact, have legal gambling, but simply try and prevent online gambling.
One wonders if the reason for much resistance to online gambling is simply a generational issue, and that in a few years, when all the lawmakers are of a generation that grew up with the Internet, that this issue (of legalized online gambling) will become a non-issue.
Jim Johnson, a Washington State Supreme Court Justice, stated that he thought the laws that are aimed specifically at online gambling, as opposed to all gambling, is most likely "a generational thing."
The fear of change could be one of the major reasons that there is so much resistance, on an official level, to online gambling.
