Spanish Blackjack is a blackjack variation, which is played with a deck of 48 cards. The four cards that have been removed from the regular deck of 52 cards are the tens. This version of blackjack has some of the best odds that are available for the game.

The house edge is raised quite substantially, by about two percent, because of the removal of the tens from the deck of cards, however, in order to compensate for this, the game rules have been adjusted slightly from those of regular blackjack. For example, payouts that are made when players obtain a 21 with varying numbers of cards, are higher than those that players will receive in other versions of the game.

Spanish Blackjack’s 21 Payout Rule

When players and the banker both get a blackjack in a regular game of blackjack, it is seen as a tie or a push, and the player will simply have their bet returned to them with no profit. However, in Spanish Blackjack, the rule is in the player’s favor, with the player’s blackjack always beating that of the dealer’s.

Other Spanish Blackjack Rules

Players may split their Spanish Blackjack hands when they have cards that are of equal value. It does not affect a split when there are different picture cards that have been dealt to one hand. It is possible to split up to a total of four hands, and the rules for Aces are the same as all the other cards in the deck. In fact, a player who has an Ace that has been split, and is then dealt a ten-value card, will still beat a 21 held by the dealer.

The dealer peaks! When the dealer deals himself a hole card, he looks at it to see whether he has a natural blackjack or not. If he does, then the hand is not played out, so players can only lose their initial wagers. Those players that are holding natural blackjacks themselves, will still beat the dealer.

Players may double after splitting if they wish to do so.

Players may choose to take an insurance bet, which is paid out at 2:1, as it is in other blackjack variations. Remember that this bet is worse in Spanish Blackjack than it is in regular blackjack because the tens have been removed from the pack.

Payouts in Spanish Blackjack

Players will receive different payouts for the many different ways that a hand with a total of 21 is made up of.

  • 5 cards - payout is 3:2
  • 6 cards - payout is 2:1
  • 7 or more cards - payout is 3:1
  • 21 made up of a 6, 7, and 8 - payout is 3:2
  • 21 made up of three 7s in mixed suits - payout is 3:2
  • 21 made up of three 7s in the same suit - payout is 2:1
  • 21 made up of three 7s of spades - payout is 3:1
