Gambling Superstitions
October 08, 2009 | Article Category: Online Casinos
Although many gamblers are not superstitious in most situations in their lives, it often happens that these same people are extremely superstitious when it comes to gambling. For those who are not superstitious, they might wonder whether these people are taking things a little too far.
When gambling in both online casinos and land-based casinos, players should always remember that with most games, especially with games of luck, and not skill, the outcome is randomly determined, and cannot be directed by any actions on the part of the gambler. Although this is well-known, there are many players who follow at least one gambling superstition, which they believe will help their chances of winning.
Some will carry a lucky charm when gambling, while others have certain rituals they follow, or perhaps certain items of clothing that they wish to wear. When rituals, either before or after a gambling session, are performed, the ritual (or rituals) often began when the player did something in the past, and won money during a previous gambling session at which the rituals were first performed.
For various reasons, players may choose to wear a lucky item of clothing, such as a ‘lucky shirt’ which they associate with winning and good luck. Alternately, there may be certain items of clothing that the player will avoid since they feel their bad luck streaks have coincided with a time when the item of clothing in question was being worn.
There are times when players may believe that they have bad, or good, luck with a specific dealer in land-based casinos and live dealer online casinos. In this circumstance, they may choose not to play the game if the dealer brought them ‘bad luck’ in the past, and may seek specific dealers that they feel has brought them good luck.
There are, of course, a number of superstitions that players follow that have passed down over time, and are not their personal superstitions based on their own experiences.
Land-based casinos have many more superstitions associated with them, such as not crossing your legs when playing poker, and other games, such as slots. The belief here is that crossing your legs will cross out your good luck. There are those who will not cross their legs when playing in online casinos too. Of course, if a player begins playing, and believes that they will have bad luck for whatever reason, it is more likely that their luck will be bad because they expect to lose. The expectation of losing could cloud their judgment when making various gambling decisions.
Land-based gamblers do not like walking though the main entrance of a casino, don’t like $50 bills, and don’t count their money when sitting at a gaming table. Of course, the list can go on for quite some time since gamblers are quite good at adding more superstitions to their repertoire as time goes on.
As long as gamblers do not become obsessed with gambling superstitions, there is usually no harm done when choosing to follow them. For those who feel lucky, they will most likely be happier, and will enjoy their gaming sessions more than those who are worried they will lose.
